Fruit on the bottom, Hope on top

There is a whole list of comedians in the world that are absolutely top notch and can just blow my mind with clever quips and stories. My personal favorites range from the craziness of Gallagher to the witty Demetri Martin. Today though I would like to spotlight one in particular comedian that I followed for years, but the world lost him back in 2005. This genius is Mitch Hedburg. My coworker and fellow blogger, Amber, mentioned him yesterday and today I’ve spent the better part of my day-off watching his best ever clips on YouTube.

Mitch has a way of making people think about everyday things in a funny way through one-liners. He addresses everything and most anything, all with his eyes closed on stage. He didn’t enjoy being in front of an audience, but loved making people laugh. What do you when you get in a situation like that? You close your eyes and do what you love. Quote from Wikipedia:

Because he suffered from stage fright, Hedberg often performed in sunglasses, with his head down and his hair in his face or his eyes closed to avoid eye contact with the audience. He often stood upstage or with his back to the audience, and constantly moved in place. Sometimes his nervousness would cause him to shake his microphone uncontrollably.

Mitch was scheduled to play in my hometown of Jacksonville, FL, but passed away just a few weeks before he had a chance to grace us with his comedic prowess. On a strange note, I just happen to read that he died today, March 29th, in 2005 and I was writing this without knowing it. It actually made me smile. It’s funny how the world works. And the quote below is a great example of the comedy of Mr. Hedburg. Enjoy.

I think Pringles original intention was to make tennis balls… but on the day the rubber was supposed to show up a truckload of potatoes came. Pringles is a laid-back company, so they just said, “Fuck it, cut em up!”

  1. I’m amazed, I have to admit. Rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both equally
educative and engaging, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the
head. The issue is something that not enough folks
are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy that I stumbled across this
during my hunt for something relating to this.

  7. I only started listening to Mitch a few days ago – quickly became completely addicted. Like hanging out with the sweetest, funniest stoner buddy you ever had. Fruit on the bottom, hope on top – I keep imagining that’s his epitaph. Great to find your post.
